Atapco Properties, Inc. is committed to environmentally conscious
development and strives to be a leader in the development of sustainable
projects. We currently evaluate each new development project for
opportunities to build more energy efficient and healthy buildings.
Our existing operating properties employ “green housekeeping”
and landscaping in keeping with our commitment to the environment.
To date 40% of our development team has obtained LEED accreditation
with more on the way.
Atapco’s East Gate Marketplace, which opened October 2009,
is Loudoun County’s first LEED Certified “Green”
shopping center. Located just west of the Loudoun County/Fairfax
County line at the intersection of Tall Cedars Parkway and Route
50, the 155,000 square foot Harris Teeter anchored East Gate Marketplace
Shopping Center serves as the cornerstone of the dynamic mixed-use
East Gate Community.
East Gate Marketplace incorporates sustainable design elements,
featuring high performance building shell design and mechanical
equipment that will yield significant energy savings. Retail tenants
can anticipate energy savings exceeding 17%, compared to a conventional
retail strip center, and office tenants can anticipate over 15%
energy savings. Our “Green” development strategy emphasizes
indoor air quality, environmentally sound site design and environmentally
friendly construction practices. The result is a healthy, environmentally
benign and energy efficient development.
The Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Green
Building Rating System, developed by the U.S. Green Building Council
(USGBC), provides a suite of standards for environmentally sustainable
construction. The hallmark of LEED is that it is an open and transparent
process where the technical criteria proposed by the LEED committees
are publicly reviewed for approval by the more than 10,000 membership
organizations that currently constitute the USGBC.
