Greencastle, Pa:  The landscape along U.S. 11 south of Greencastle will change soon as a $1 million grant was recently approved for the Antrim Commons Business Park. The grant is through the state Redevelopment Assistance Capital Program (or R-CAP) and the Franklin County commissioners recently agreed to back the money.

The United Business Park in Shippensburg also received a $1.5 million grant.

The grants will be used to improve infrastructure at both locations.

The grants were previously approved by former Gov. Ed Rendell. However, when current Gov. Tom Corbett took office, he froze all payments until they could be re-evaluated after it was discovered that $10 million was to be given to the Arlen Specter Library and an additional $10 million to the John P. Murtha Center for Public Policy.

The Park

Atapco, the company developing Antrim Commons Business Park, has been in the process of receiving approvals and permits from Antrim Township for months and has been aggressively marketing the property to potential businesses.

The park is on 203 acres and will touch the Norfolk Southern Franklin County Regional Intermodal Facility, which is currently under construction. The park can accommodate 2.5 million square feet of large box industrial, highway retail and flex industry users, according to information on Atapco’s website.

Companies looking to locate in the business park can expect a state-of-the-art fire safety and sprinkler system, Internet access, industrial grade utilities and direct access to Interstate 81 and U.S. 11.

The site has room for 11 buildings.

Little Risk

For the county to be required to pay back any of the grant money,  they would have to go belly up, according to the commissioners. Atapco has vast holdings and commissioners would not have backed the grants if they did not think both companies were financially sound.
